New HIPAA Rules Go Into Effect February 17th
Beginning February 17, 2010, health insurance agents and brokers must comply with a new version of HIPAA privacy and security. The genesis for the new regulations is the electronic medical records provision of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) or stimulus act. The new provisions have raised the expectation of compliance (and punishment for non-compliance) for all Covered Entities. Agents, brokers, consultants and for the first time business associates are classified as Covered Entities. In today's environment, we all must become compliant with HIPAA privacy and security as well as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley privacy requirements.
Changes in Licensing Laws to Take Effect on January 1, 2010 (11/01/09)
AB 800 (Chapter 254, Statutes of 2009) Insurance Omnibus will become effective on January 1, 2010. This bill made several changes to the California Insurance Code (CIC) for the purpose of encouraging online filings from insurance producers and to bring California closer to uniformity with other states' producer licensing laws.
Please take a moment to review the attached Notice for changes that may have a direct effect on insurance producers and applicants.
Should you have any questions, please either email the Producer Licensing Bureau or call the Producer Licensing Hotline at (800) 967-9331 or (916) 322-3555. For emails, please be sure to include your name, telephone number, license number and current email address.
